Ernst Karl Winter

Ernst Karl Winter (1895-1959) was an Austrian social historian, sociologist and politician. He tried to achieve a harmonious relationship between the Christian Social camp, the Social Democrats, and the Communists in order to work toward a common defense against National Socialist aggression. Reconciliation of those on the "right" and the "left" was not a means to an end for Winter, but his political conviction ("stand on the right and think left"). Ernst Karl Winter was one of the outstanding personalities of the first 20 years of the Republic. He is one of the first pioneers of a self-aware "Austrian nation" independent of Germany.
